Perseverance

I spent my afternoon watching an hour and 3o minutes of a movie. The movie is called Homeless to Harvard. A very inspiring one.

It's based on true story. Liz Murray's parents were drug addicts and were infected by HIV. She was homeless at just 15. Her mother died because of AIDS at that time and her father was sent to a homeless shelter. Murray's life turned around when she began attending the Humanities Preparatory Academy in Chelsea, Manhattan. Though she started high school later than most students, and remained without a stable home while supporting herself and her sister, Murray graduated in only two years ( normally would take 4 years ). She was awarded a New York Times scholarship for needy students and accepted into Harvard University, matriculating in the fall semester of 2000. She left Harvard in 2003 to care for her sick father; she resumed her education at Columbia University to be closer to him. In 2006 her father died of AIDS. She eventually returned to Harvard in 2008 and graduated in June 2009 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. As of August 2009, she had begun taking graduate courses at Harvard Summer School and would like to earn a doctorate in clinical psychology to counsel people from all walks of life.

Some nice quotes from Liz Murray.

" Don't look at the people around you who are doing things and think that they are made of something more than you. Don't get psyched out. They are not made out of anything different than you are. As long as you are willing to work past the point where you feel that you have absolutely nothing left inside of you. That's perseverance. "

" You know that feeling , where you just don't want to do something. Where you just want to give up ? I think to have perseverance is to know exactly how to overcome that feeling , every time it hits you. "

Amazing isn't it ? My afternoon wasn't just a waste. =)
